Outdoor classrooms - Schools looking outside to inspire students

by Caroline Alphonso - No walls. No desks. No pencils and paper. The kids in Michelle Cain’s Grade 1 class are learning math in the sandbox. Ms. Cain fills a styrofoam cup with sand, and the group of five- and six-year-olds – at times easily distracted by the natural impulse to build sandcastles – add more cups of sand to make 10. They are learning basic addition, but their afternoon spent in this outdoor classroom at Hillcrest Public School in Barrie, Ont., is giving them a leg up in more ways than one. “There’s so much stuff we can use in this classroom to help us learn,” Ms. Cain tells her class.

Toronto school board halves number of roof repairs to be funded by solar panel program

by Moira MacDonald - The Toronto District School Board will only be able to do half of the school roof repairs it originally hoped under an updated deal to finance the costs through green energy premiums produced through a massive installation of solar panels.

Although board chair Chris Bolton insisted that the deal is “not less” than one first announced in May 2011, the board said Thursday it would be replacing some 4.3 million square feet of its roofing stock, representing between $45-million to $50-million in repair costs, and one-sixth of its total 26 million square feet of roof inventory. That stands in contrast to the $120-million in roof repairs and revenue the board announced in 2011 when it first spoke about a “historic deal” to replace its roofs through money generated from installation of solar panels.

Campus Conservation Nationals - largest conservation competition program for colleges and universities in the world

September 17, 2013 — The Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council, through its USGBC Students program, and Lucid, in partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy and the National Wildlife Federation are pleased to announce Campus Conservation Nationals (CCN) 2014. From February through April 2014, participating students will have the opportunity to compete to reduce electricity and water consumption in the largest conservation competition program for colleges and universities in the world. Program registration runs from Sept. 17 through Oct. 25, 2013, and is open to both two and four year institutions.

During the program’s Spring 2014 competition window, students will compete to reduce energy and water usage in campus buildings during their school’s three-week competition. Using Lucid's Building Dashboard®, students will be able to instantly compare performance, track standings among schools and buildings, and share their successful strategies with other competitors.
