A Look into the History of School Design

The U.S. National Institute of Building Sciences’ National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities has published a new study that looks back at the designs of school buildings of the recent past, identifying trends in energy consumption, ventilation, heating, air quality, lighting and acoustics. The study, "A History of School Design and its Indoor Environmental Standards, 1900 to Today" was written by Lindsay Baker, a doctoral candidate in the Building Sciences program of the Architecture department at the University of California, Berkeley.

Three U.S. Public High Schools Win Sustainable Energy Award

WASHINGTON – May 21, 2012 – The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) today announced the three winning high schools for the Sustainable Energy Award, sponsored by Samsung:

- Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy, Erie, Pa.
- Boston Latin School, Boston, Mass.
- Secondary Academy for Success, Bothell, Wash.

Selected by a panel of judges following a nationwide search, the schools demonstrated a school-wide effort to achieve energy savings through the creative and innovative use of technology. Each school will receive $10,000 to further their initiatives.

Solar Farm Generating Power at Lawrenceville School

by Chrysti Neuman - The array's nearly 25,000 individual solar panels will generate 90 percent of the private school's energy needs. Bees with hives arranged around the panels will also produce 400 pounds of honey annually.

University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus Wins Five Green Globes™

VANCOUVER, April 30, 2012 /CNW/ - Kasian, a leading global architecture, design and planning firm, is pleased to announce that the Charles E. Fipke Centre for Innovative Research, (Fipke Centre), and the adjacent Arts & Sciences Building, located at the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia (UBCO), have both been awarded five Green Globes™. These are the first campus buildings in the world to each receive five Green Globes and are also the first paired buildings to attain this distinction. Both buildings are designed by Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd, (Kasian), in collaboration with the UBC Properties Trust.
