James Mollison’s latest book and exhibition capture playgrounds from around the world

by Paul Makovsky, Metropolis Magazine - In 2009, the photographer James Mollison was reflecting upon his Oxford school days when he realized that nearly everything he remembered happened on the playground—memories of games that were playful and fun, but also some that were violent. Inspired, Mollison embarked on a book project: photographing the playgrounds of both private and state schools in England. “Some of the private schools in England would have virtually no supervision for the children on the playground because they’d been taught from a young age how to play and interact,” he says. “Whereas I went to one inner-city state school in London and I was assigned a security guard for my protection.”

While on assignment, Mollison expanded the project to include schools in Kenya and eventually trekked around the world, photographing playgrounds in more than a dozen countries. He found an incredible diversity in the schools but, also, a universality in the children’s play—particularly with boys. “Maybe it’s just because I was thinking about my own time in the playground,” Mollison says. “It didn’t matter where I was, boys pretty much did the same thing".

What it takes to build 21st-century schools

March 2, 2015 - by John Caulfield - Florida’s Orange County Public Schools is the nation’s 10th-largest school district, with 180-plus schools and 192,000 students in grades K–12. Making changes in a district this size “is like trying to turn a battleship,” says Faz Ali, Senior Director of Planning and Design.

His district has been taking what he describes as “baby steps” toward embracing design and construction innovations aimed at making schools more student centered, project oriented, and technology enhanced. Those are the three signposts of what, for an increasing number of public school districts and private schools across the country, has come to define a so-called “21st-Century School.”

Dunbar High School Achieves LEED Platinum - "Greenest School in the World"

Washington, DC - February 25, 2015 - Perkins Eastman is proud to announce that Dunbar High School in Washington, DC, has been certified LEED Platinum, the highest distinction, by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Designed by international design and architecture firm Perkins Eastman in association with Moody•Nolan, the 280,000 sf school achieved 91 points, out of 100 base points possible for LEED, making it the highest-scoring school in the world certified under USGBC’s LEED for Schools-New Construction system. The new school building welcomed its first students in 2013.
