UK Schools to be Included in Government's Carbon Reduction Commitment

On July 16th, the Rt. Hon. Hilary Benn announced that carbon emissions from state schools are set to be included in a carbon trading scheme to help promote energy efficiency. Energy used in schools will count as part of the overall carbon footprint of local authorities under the Carbon Reduction Commitment Scheme (CRC), a mandatory scheme that encourages local authorities to reduce emissions. This will encourage local authorities to provide help and advice to schools about how to cut energy bills and carbon emissions. The CRC is a mandatory emissions trading scheme being introduced by the UK Government to cover large businesses and public sector organisations whose half-hourly metered electricity use is above 6,000 MWh in 2008.
