Why more college campuses are going carbon-neutral

A few years ago, hundreds of U.S. colleges publicly committed to achieve zero net emissions goals at some point in the future. For a growing number that point is now.

In 2009, college and university leaders representing all 50 states signed a climate commitment to make their campuses carbon-neutral. Today, the Climate Leadership Network includes more than 600 U.S. institutions, which together serve roughly a third of the nation’s students.

Read the premiere issue of Green Schools Catalyst Quarterly

The premiere issue of the Green Schools Catalyst Quarterly (GSCQ) is out! Currently, there is no publication dedicated to the advancement of green, healthy, sustainable K-12 schools. The GSCQ will be a peer reviewed, high interest digital magazine that highlights evidence-based practices for replication in green, healthy, sustainable schools. GSCQ will explore issues in-depth, including qualitative and quantitative research, and will include columns that report on and explore emergent issues.

Best of Green Schools honorees cultivate environmental literacy through action

Atlanta, GA - March 22, 2017 - The Green Schools Conference and Expo, which convened this week in Atlanta, Georgia, highlighted the intersection of sustainability, curriculum and programming, building design, facilities management, health and wellness and community service. During the conference, the Center for Green Schools at USGBC and the Green Schools National Network (GSNN) announced the recipients of the 2017 Best of Green Schools awards, which recognize individuals, institutions, projects and events that embody the most impactful efforts in school sustainability.

Green Schools Catalyst Journal launches March 20

Madison, WI - On March 20, the Green Schools Catalyst Quarterly Journal launches. The new education journal is a publication of the Green Schools National Network (GSNN), with the support of several partner organizations.

Do you know where the green schools movement began? How far back should we look, and how deep are the roots? That’s where GSNN's journal, the Green Schools Catalyst Quarterly (GSCQ), starts the story in their very first issue. Authors from schools, school districts, nonprofits and academia give different perspectives on the origin of the effort to improve the environmental impact, health and wellness and student sustainability literacy in our nation’s schools.

The journal is the first peer-reviewed digital magazine dedicated to the advancement of green, healthy, sustainable K–12 schools. GSCQ highlights evidence-based practices; explores topics in depth, including qualitative and quantitative research; and presents columns that report on emergent issues.

Peer Review of Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings: Achieving Zero Energy

In partnership with AIA, IES, and USGBC and with support from the DOE, ASHRAE has embarked on a new series of Advanced Energy Design Guides focusing on achieving zero energy performance. The first guide in the series is for K-12 School Buildings. The project committee is finalizing the first draft in anticipation of the first peer review. The 65% Complete Technical Refinement Draft for the Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School: Achieving Zero Energy will be available for review and feedback from February 6, 2017 to February 17, 2017. All review input must be received by February 19, 2017. Once received, the input will be compiled and then reviewed by the committee who will make changes to the draft based on that input. To participate in the review, please go to https://www.ashrae.org/freeaedg to download the review process instructions and review input form as well as a copy of the document for review (in pdf format). The draft will be available for download starting on February 6, 2017 through Friday, February 17, 2017.
